Mace is the aril of the fruit of an evergreen tree (Myristica fragrans Houtt) native to the Moluccan Islands. This fruit has an external pulpy portion in which inside there is a big seed inside a shell, which is nutmeg. Covering the shell there is a lace-like web that surrounds it, the aril, which is scarlet to crimson and constitutes the mace.
